5 Wellness Habits I’ve Embraced in January for a Healthier Business and Life

As business owners, we often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of juggling everything. Between managing clients, working late, and keeping the wheels of our business turning, it’s easy to neglect our health and well-being. I’m guilty of this too—sometimes I get so absorbed in something that I don’t even realise my whole evening has slipped away. But I’ve come to realise that prioritising self-care isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity if I want to be successful in both life and business.

I wanted to share some wellness practices I’ve embraced recently that have made a significant difference in my energy, focus, and overall well-being. These simple yet powerful habits have helped me maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life—and I believe they can help you too.

1. Phone-Free Evenings (Mostly)

Let’s be honest, this has been a challenge. There are days when I’ve worked late or found myself scrolling through my phone, but for the majority of January, I’ve made a conscious effort to step away from the screen. I’ve removed Instagram from my personal phone to minimise distractions and make it easier to switch off after work.

Evenings have now become a sacred time for me to recharge. I’ve made more space for journaling, meditating, and simply being present with myself. These small pockets of "me time" have become essential for my well-being, helping me feel more grounded, peaceful, and focused.

As business owners, we’re constantly plugged in—checking emails, managing social media, and keeping everything running smoothly. But I’ve found that taking a break from screens in the evening allows me to recharge and reset, so I can come back the next day with a fresh perspective and renewed energy.

I’m not beating myself up for the evenings when I haven’t fully stepped away from my phone. This is a practice, and if I gave up every time I didn’t “get it right,” I’d never make progress. So, I’m learning to be kinder to myself along the way.

2. Moving My Body

Last year, I joined a new gym closer to my home. I’d been struggling to make it to the old gym, always coming up with excuses that it was too far away. So, I decided to make it easier on myself by finding a gym I could actually commit to. Now, I go to the gym three times a week and have even created an awesome Spotify playlist to keep me motivated.

When I’m not at the gym, I enjoy free movement at home—dancing around my living room to my favourite songs (yes, it might sound a bit wild, but it’s so freeing!). I also try to practice yoga whenever I can, and I’ve started pole fitness—because, honestly, it’s tough as hell, and I love a good challenge.

You might be thinking: how do you find the time or even the money?

Exercise has become non-negotiable for me so I make the time and put aside the finances if I need to for it.

As business owners, it’s easy to let stress pile up and neglect our physical health, but moving my body has helped me manage stress, boost my energy, and feel sharper both physically and mentally. Even if it’s just a short workout or a few minutes of movement, making time for exercise makes a world of difference in how I show up for my clients and my business.

3. Setting Intentions

Setting intentions is a powerful practice that helps me stay grounded and focused, not just on my goals but on the feelings and values I want to bring into my life. This year, I've made a conscious effort to align my actions with the things that truly matter to me, like well-being, balance, and connection.

Some of the things I’ve included on my vision board are organic food, connection, adventures, being productive—not busy, meditation, health, and nature. These aren’t just random ideas—they’re a reflection of what I want to prioritise and how I want to feel every day.

For example:

  • Healthy eating, fitness, and self-care are at the forefront for me this year. My intention is prioritise my wellbeing, to focus on nourishing my body with vegetables, getting regular movement, and rest.

  • I’m also setting an intention to connect more deeply with the people I care about.

  • I want to embrace balance by being productive, not busy. I’m learning to slow down and focus on the things that truly matter, rather than getting caught in the whirlwind of doing more for the sake of doing more.

  • Spending more time in nature and practising meditation are also part of my intention to stay grounded and present.

These aren’t just goals for me—they’re the kind of energy and mindset I want to carry through my days, both in my personal life and in my business. By setting these intentions, I’m creating a roadmap for how I want to show up, not just for my work, but for myself and the people around me.

So, this year, I’m focused on aligning my actions with these deeper intentions. It's not about achieving perfection, but about living in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling, every single day.

4. Starting a Core Memories Scrapbook

I decided to get creative and start a core memories scrapbook. I used to love scrapbooking as a teenager, and I wanted to bring that joy back into my life. I’ve ditched my personal Instagram to focus on capturing memories and moments I want to remember in a more intentional, tangible way. It’s been such a fun and rewarding creative outlet, and it’s also a wonderful way to reflect on the positive experiences that remind me of what truly matters and practice gratitude.

For business owners, creativity can be such an important tool for managing stress and finding joy outside of work. Whether it’s through art, writing, or another form of self-expression, allowing yourself to create without the pressure of perfection can be incredibly freeing and therapeutic.

5. Cooking From Scratch

Last year, I rediscovered my love for cooking, especially after I started growing my own vegetables in the garden. There’s something so satisfying about harvesting fresh veggies and turning them into a delicious meal from scratch. It’s not just about the food—it’s about connecting with what I’m eating, being mindful of the ingredients, and taking pride in creating something with my own hands.

Cooking from scratch has become a form of self-care for me. It allows me to slow down, be creative, and enjoy the simple pleasures of nourishing myself and my husband. I’ve even started making my dog’s food from scratch, and not only is it saving us so much money—but he absolutely loves it! His allergies have even improved since we made the switch.

The Power of Prioritising Wellness as a Business Owner

As business owners, we often put our businesses ahead of everything else. But I’ve come to realise that in order to show up at my best for my clients and my business, I need to show up for myself first. Self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and yoga (though those are nice too!). It’s about setting boundaries, taking time to recharge, and nurturing your body and mind so you can sustain the hard work and dedication it takes to run a business.

By prioritising wellness in my life, I’ve been able to reduce stress, stay grounded, and remain productive while still enjoying the journey. I encourage you to take small steps to invest in your well-being as well—whether it's stepping away from screens at night, moving your body, or treating yourself to some much-needed relaxation. Your business will thank you for it.

Let me know: How do you prioritise your well-being as a business owner? I’d love to hear what’s working for you!
